Presented by Base Window, Peter Hutchinson’s Sketch Book 1968–1974 reveals the visual notes of a pioneer of Land Art and Narrative Art: ephemeral landscape interventions, annotated photographs, collages, and playful language experiments. The book traces the transformation of environments through growth and decay, the continuities from micro to macro scales, and the constant interplay between text and image. Produced in 1975 at Atelier Laage using screen printing and photomontage, and published in an edition of 65 copies, this collection consolidates the core of Hutchinson’s iconic land and sea projects from volcanoes to coastlines. Subtly woven throughout are a discreet sense of humor and a diaristic mode of writing that turn nature into a narrative, and a studio notebook into a work of art.
